MEDARIST II is a complete system, which handles electronic patient records for surgery wards. These criteria were integrated with the existing requirements analysis. Special sessions between the developers determined a set of usability criteria the system should meet, for example response time, physical ergonomics, ease of use, availability, etc. These questionnaires recorded users reactions and beliefs after experimenting with a rapid prototype of the system. The analysis of social, ethical and other HCI factors of the system was performed based on specially prepared questionnaires delivered by the users.

The database serving the system was implemented using Oracle’s “SQL Plus 8.0” while the operating system used was Windows NT. This model was developed in “Power Designer 6.0”.Īn hierarchical structure was followed for preparing the electronic patient records, which were designed using the “Forms Builder 5.0” tool of the “Oracle Developer 2000” product. To achieve the high flexibility required for extending the data model to other departments, functions were separated into two categories, general and specific. Electronic patient records have been designed for surgery departments, general and emergency. The design phase incorporated also ethical issues posed by the use of electronic patient records and usability ergonomics.Ī relational star-shaped data model for clinical workstations was used for the design of the new information system.
Īpart from the system’s functional requirements, special attention has been given to social factors directly related to the users, like satisfaction, moral, beliefs etc. This system has been developed for use in clinical workstations and takes into account varied requirements, user acceptance and future extension. A hierarchical structure has been chosen for the user interface. MEDARIST II is a new departmental information system for surgery wards which is based on a self-developed relational data model with a star-shaped topology.
